Ever wonder why you react a certain way in relationships or feel stuck in familiar patterns? The answer might lie in understanding your role within your family system.

Your family of origin shapes how you communicate, handle conflict, and relate to others. Whether you were the peacemaker, the golden child, the invisible one, or the scapegoat , these roles follow us into adulthood—often unconsciously.

Jesus changed the game for me. Life was never the same. I said goodbye to religion and hello to a relationship with my creator. The way I view and treat people totally changed.

I’ve used word pictures to describe boundaries before but recently my supervisor told me that boundaries is like building a fence around your house instead of building a fence around your neighbors / someone else’s. And that was so helpful. #therapyforwomen #boundaries

Oh you mean the way I didn’t have the energy to pour into my friendships / community growing up because I was to busy learning how to pour into you?

“Im learning how to pour into my community” It’s a phrase said often. (totally a Christian culture thing too )

And eldest siblings / daughters don’t get it. Here’s why:

One, why are you learning how to pour into people so late in life? And second where are you showing up for your actual family? If you’re not showing up and supporting your actually family too what are you doing?

This is mostly because the eldest daughter has oriented her life around family and you probably didn’t even realize it or appreciate it. She learned how to pour into others years ago.

People who say this are probably not prioritizing family for their own reasons and making pseudo family elsewhere — that’s probably why they have to process about it. They are learning about themselves in ways that they should have learned about either growing up or plugging back into their family of origin, which in human development happens around late twenties through their thirties.

And hey there’s very real reasons why people build family elsewhere for sure. Family is hard. You move for jobs. Etc However,

In an eldest daughter’s mind, you should be doing both (pouring into family and community) and not talking so much about it.

Throw in the fact that they are moms and have kids now meaning being poured into would be nice.

It’ll feel like a slap in the face.

So go build your community, family or brothers and sisters somewhere. Just for the love of donuts 🍩 dont talk to your eldest sister about it.

Oh 2016.

I never felt more free and yet alone at the same time. It was the year after I graduated from college and my worst nightmare happened. My closest friends had all moved away … AND I had to move home.

I was recovering from being cheated on in Bible college and truly was in a haze. 🥴 went on to date a string of bad guys.

I went to therapy and realized for the first time how powerful it was to just be listened to especially when you felt like you literally had no one to talk to. I think it’s also ironic that ten years later I’d be a therapist working with clients who experience betrayal trauma. I also love working with women in their early twenties. There’s so much going on at that age and I needed the support at that time too.

Still I think about how much I grew and how I was thankful for the lessons God taught me. It was the year I got my first full time job in radio. 📻 It was such a pivotal time for me. I really could have kept going down a harder path.

Instead He taught me how to live on my own, be more independent, and enjoy spending time with myself. It’s made me a better wife (married to a pastor you’ve gotta be independent) and a better mom too.

I’m thankful for the people in my life at that time who looked past an angry 22 year old, heard me, lived out Jesus in a real way and saw the creative adult I wanted to be.

I started learning photography, modeling a little, was posting on instagram like crazy. Became the cringe you know and love. Started my blog the summer/fall of 2015 and by January 2016 I knew this was sticking ✨🫶

It’s the year I truly understood God’s grace in my life. I really didn’t want anything to do with Him and yet He had blessed me with a job I loved, answered specific prayers, a beautiful apartment towards the middle of 2016 and set me up with some of my life long friends. And that’s how His Grace works my friends. We do nothing to deserve it.

“All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord” Romans 8:28

We love to do things! That’s the biggest thing John and I miss after having kids. John shared with me this year that he’s been missing that. So it’s our goal to do more mini adventures. I think for me I needed more practice with us doing things together. That way I wasn’t constantly answering questions or that it all fell on me. It just takes practice and so this is your encouragement to do the mini adventures as a family. 🤍

One thing I think is so important for kids is to feel connected to a bigger story and this can happen with photos. I am always looking for creative ways to display and document our family’s stories.

This idea is a large pinboard. I’m obsessed right now I’m using it for Christmas cards but I am excited to put lots of photos and inspiration on it for a real like Pinterest board. 🙌

I love a reset, new ideas, and goal setting. here’s a few things I now do in January to get ready for a new year.

1. I plan out 6 months at a time. This is mostly for my blog and podcast but I’d like it to translate for our family’s year. I’ve found this helps take the pressure off.

2. I use a habit tracker on notion along with breaking down goals into practical steps

3. I have 3 goals each year that I journal about each month in my notebook planner to keep it top of mind.

I have found that having a digital system and a physical planner helps me a ton!

Still loving my Ugg Tasman slippers and my leather boots from @nisoloshoes. I am proud each year I can get out of my clothing items now. It makes me so happy. ☺️
